This web site is a celebration by me, Karl Loren, for having completed more than five years of research, writing and publishing web pages following an earlier 15+ years studying health while lecturing about it all over the country.  I have spent literally thousands of hours on these efforts and now have one of the most popular web presences on the net -- my work now accounting for about 100,000 pages, when and if printed on normal size paper.  Click HERE for full details of my number of pages and number of visitors.

My style of writing, and many other characteristics have changed progressively during these five plus years.   As at May 2003, this is my most recent web site on health matters.  It is different from any other of my writings and web sites in several respects.

First, I have, by nature, been a skeptic of "drugs" virtually all my life.  I was raised for much of my youth as a "Christian Scientist" who "did not believe in doctors."  I had a life of great health and practically no medical needs.  Certainly I have not taken medical drugs except for aspirin and few odds and ends until the last few years.  Researching for THIS web site has convinced me that the NSAIDs I thought were safe for my pain are not safe.

Second, as to actual design mechanics for a web?  I have learned a great deal.  You should find this web easier to use than any of my others.  This web is the first of my many web sites to include sound files of my interviews.  My long career on radio and TV resulted in an unutilized library of hundreds of hours of "good stuff."  This is the first place where some of that material is offered, along with sound files for my new series of nation-wide radio interviews starting at the same time as this web site got started.  The first of my many radio interviews is described here.

Finally, I have honed my investigative and research skills.  Not only do to work more quickly, but I see the fallacies in large health claims with more certainty.  I am rather proud to be threatened with law suit -- and have never lost one.  One came during my early writing of this web and gave me insight into a new technique the bad guys are using to harm the good guys.

In other words, this web site is one of which I am very proud.  I commend it to your attention.  You find many "personal" web sites on the net, but I've never seen any that rise to this level of professionalism and size, but remain personal.  I still answer the phone and respond to eMails -- personally.

For whatever reason I was never attracted to any street drugs. During my first 19 years I also never drank any alcohol -- my religious upbringing.

I did slowly move away from my Christian Science faith, into agnosticism and it was not until I was over 40 years old that I rediscovered God and found comfort in a new Church.   I do not write about or promote my religion on these pages.

This whole web site is a very personal, very passionate message to you.  I do not hide my dislike for drugs, and my great skepticism about doctors and the traditional medical system.  So, that is my bias, if you could not guess it quickly.

But there is more than a condemnation of drugs in these pages.  I hold out the hand of hope and help to those who will read -- there is a non-drug alternative that is much safer, effective and even costs less than most of the prescription pain drugs.

I became aware of "arthritis" when I started to feel that pain.  I was about 65 when it started, and I found that I was no longer able to button my shirt -- I actually had to ask my wife to button them for me -- and started wearing shirts that had no buttons.

I rather accidentally started using Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM) to relieve my arthritis pain.  I say accidentally because I had heard about it many years previously, but never researched further into it nor used it.  Incidentally, MSM uses something called "DMSO" as the single raw material from which to make MSM. DMSO is unpleasant to use, while MSM doesn't make your body smell like garlic.  DMSO is used by ONE drug company to make its arthritis pain drug.  DMSO by itself IS also effective in handling the pain of arthritis.

Then I started taking some MSM. The first experience was startling.  I've written about that HERE.  That personal experience has been offered to many others, now, who have been pleased that their own experiences were not unique.

As the years went by I found that I had to take increasing amounts of MSM in order to achieve pain relief.

Finally, my wife in a similar boat, and me by this time at 72 years, had enough pain that we were both taking a common non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for arthritis (Naproxen) on a fairly regular basis, and then went into the traditional medical world, got an X-Ray, then an MRI, then another X-Ray, then a consultation with a surgeon, and am now scheduled for hip replacement surgery in the fall of 2003. 

I am human too!

My wife went through a similar journey, and is to receive a complete artificial knee replacement in May 2003 -- a few weeks from the time of this writing.

During this time I was still very active.  Somehow my finger pain, supposedly from arthritis, went away and I can button shirts with no difficulty. But, I was limping and my hip joints hurt like the dickens.  Fortunately, my piano playing and my typing were still good.  I have no trouble writing for my web sites.  I have, for years, spent probably more than 60 hours per week at my computer, researching, writing, publishing, and answering personal eMails from all who would write me a personal message.

During this time I have confirmed my early skepticism about drugs and doctors. 

I met through eMail and built up a very close friendship with Dr. Ayyangar, of Bombay, India, and together we created some products for sale on my commercial web sites.  He is the owner of a Nutraceutical company manufacturing, among other things, Methyl Sulfonyl Methane.

He is also a practicing physician -- but not in the Western mode.  He practices using the ancient art of healing based on the Ayurveda -- the ancient books of India that use herbs and life style changes to achieve bodily harmony and health.  The ancients in India had none of today's drugs to use, and achieved remarkable results with the special approach of the Ayurvedic Remedies, involving Indian herbs.

I want to emphasize here, though, that the Ayurvedic approach to using herbs places great importance on HOW those herbs are administered.  In the case of the Herbal products presented in these pages, the Ayurvedic approach is that these herbs must not be swallowed without allowing them to first mix with the saliva in the mouth.  You'll find much more on this in these web pages, but do please understand that whatever results people get with Ayurvedic remedies would, presumably, follow ALL the Ayurvedic principles -- not just the simple swallowing of some herb mentioned within the Ayurveda.

I am not offering "Ayurvedic philosophy" here -- I am presenting herbs, prepared and taken in specific ways described in books (written in Sanskrit which Dr. Ayyangar reads fluently) and where those herbs, and those principles have been used and observed by millions of people, over some 5,000 years.

Ultimately, you may read enough here to decide to take advantage of a further research tool I am using.

What can you learn here?

First, you can read about the "deadly dozen drugs" currently most often used to relieve the pain of arthritis.  If you are taking a prescription drug for that purpose, then probably I have included that in my review.  You will find, at that link, the home page for that section with each of these drugs listed and many further pages referenced for each of those drugs.  They are all harmful, and you should know about them.  Many of these deadly drugs are what are called "Cox-2 Inhibitors." That phrase is unfortunate.  It is far beyond the simple understanding of most people who take the stuff. You can click here and read a simple explanation of what that term means, plus my own comments on the lack of full truth.

This web site is about PAIN!  The terrible truth is that virtually NONE of the medical doctors, or even the pain researchers, has stumbled onto the truth about pain.  I have!  How can I be so certain?  Well, I don't mind being right.  This is a revolutionary position for me to take -- that I, Karl Loren, understand the concept of "pain" while literally thousands of scientists and doctors do not. That may turn off some readers, but I do urge them, before they leave, to read my article about PAIN. The truth is that "memories of past pain" are much more of a factor in what you feel as the sensation of pain than any present time, physical universe causation.  Wrap your wits around that and you will see the uselessness of using chemicals to cure pain!

Pain is in the news! Big time!

Diseases seem to go in cycles of popularity -- cancer was the only topic of news interest many years ago.  Richard Nixon announced that he would win the war on Cancer, and, of course, never had a clue as to how difficult that would be with a drug approach.

I recall how AIDS was almost the only disease you found in the news media years ago -- in any one edition of any major newspaper you could be sure to find stories of the forthcoming doom caused the epidemic of AIDS.

Other diseases have risen up to the national consciousness -- not too long ago it was Diabetes, and more recently obesity.

Heart disease has always been there as a major topic.

But, in this time period, 2003, PAIN seems to have become THE news item.

A study found that 50 million workdays were lost to pain in 1995. ["Pain and absenteeism in the workplace," study conducted for Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, 1997.] The same study revealed that untreated pain results in lower productivity, greater employee absenteeism, and higher insurance premiums.  (source)

Probably because the drug companies are getting ready to release a whole new form of pain remedy that will be expensive. The media coverage will excite the health care consumer into a demand for insurance coverage of the "new" drug that handles pain without the terrible side effects of all the others.
