[Karl Note: Here is a fascinating turn of events. This web site presents MSM, Methyl Sulfonyl Methane as the carrier for Ayurvedic Herbs -- as a formula for the relief of pain of arthritis. Here, on this page, is Pennsaid, which is manufactured from "DMSO" which is the raw material from which MSM is manufactured.
DMSO has many uses, and many research studies showing that it is a very effective penetrant, just as is, of course, the MSM that is the refined version of DMSO. All the claims made for Pennsaid are generally applicable to the Herbal MSM described in these pages. THE Company that has developed THIS product wanted to get the well proven pain relief of MSM, but also wanted to be able to get a patent on it, and to make it into a drug. Drugs, generally, have a much better marketing future than natural remedies.
The patents already issued about MSM demonstrate that it is a powerful but safe anti-arthritic substance.
The fact that Pennsaid is really not much different from MSM is hidden from the public -- and why not. It has been altered from the natural product so that they could add a drug claim and get a patent on it. Smart marketing, but the truth is revealed here.
Whether Dimethaid actually added anything of value to the basic DMSO (MSM) is also hidden since the full details of their product is not available from them. You have to discover the name of the drug they added to their DMSO, and learn about that.
The drug which is added to the DMSO is diclofenac which is nothing more than an ordinary NSAID. These are worthy of further exposure. Diclofenac is also used for killing cancer.
NSAID drugs are widely used to treat the pain of arthritis, but have a high death rate and an alarming number of forced hospital admissions related to their use. Most of the drugs on this web site are COX-2 Inhibitors which were developed to overcome the dangers of NSAID drugs.

Patented transdermal drug delivery technology which uses dimethysulfoxide (DMSO) to transfer active drug compounds into an injured area of the body. Using this technology, minimal amounts of the active drug enter the bloodstream. Consequently, systematic or "whole body" side effects are minimized.

Attention Business Editors:
Dimethaid's topical PENNSAID(R) equivalent to oral osteoarthritis drug Results to be presented at European Conference
TORONTO, April 7 /CNW/ - Specialty pharmaceutical developer Dimethaid
Research Inc. (TSX: DMX) will present results from a new osteoarthritis study
to the European Congress of Rheumatology to be held in Lisbon, Portugal,
June 18-21. The study, comparing the company's topically applied PENNSAID(R)
with a similar oral treatment, was conducted across Canada in a large group of
patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis (OA).
Lead investigator Dr. Peter Tugwell, Professor of Medicine, Faculty of
Medicine, University of Ottawa/Ottawa Hospital, will deliver an oral
presentation of the results at the conference, expected to attract some 8,000
delegates representing medical specialists, industry insiders and patient
advocacy groups from around the world.
"This is a prestigious opportunity," said Dr. Judith Burgess, Dimethaid's
director of research and development. "This work provides definitive answers
to how well our commercial product stands up to oral anti-arthritic
medication."
The double-blinded trial compared an oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
drug (NSAID), to PENNSAID. Dimethaid's topical was equivalent to the oral in
relieving symptoms associated with knee OA. The study also compared safety, a
crucial consideration given concerns about the serious side effects reported
during treatment with oral NSAIDs. Skin reactions were the most frequently
reported adverse events associated with PENNSAID treatment, while the oral
NSAID was linked to a variety of gastrointestinal problems.
Market researchers Frost & Sullivan estimate that NSAID spending
throughout the European Union amounts to $2.5 billion (US).
