Karl Loren Note:  It is my opinion that this company is a fraud and that probably a few people who buy their product will receive it, but after they receive "too many" requests for refunds, they will quietly disappear, not be found, and will have sold many thousands of dollars of junk -- hopefully junk that is not harmful.  This opinion is published this May 15, 2003.

My detailed analysis of this fraud is here.

DISCUSSION: With joint pain adversely affecting more than 80 million Americans, science continues its search for the “perfect” pain reliever. Materials that have the ability to affect the IL-1 Beta inflammatory compound, the COX-2 inflammatory enzyme, and the 5-LO inflammatory pathway are prime targets. For example, Celebrex,®* the most popular prescription anti-inflammatory, has been shown to selectively inhibit the COX-2 enzyme (but not the 5-LO inflammatory pathway). Glucosamine, a dietary supplement widely used in the treatment of joint pain, is neither a selective COX-2 nor a selective 5-LO inhibitor (although it may have other benefits).
“I’ve never relied on drugs to take away pain… [But] when the weather turned cold, my shoulder ached so bad I couldn’t sleep at night. Then I tried [Trivestin]. Within one hour on a cold wintry day, my knees didn’t hurt and my shoulder felt as if it were brand new… if it hadn’t been for [Trivestin], I’d still be toughing it out, and I’d still be in pain…”
Bruce Burnett, PhD

Trivestin™, a novel combination of plant extracts, singled out from more than 1,228 carefully screened candidate plants, was selected for its ability to block these established inflammatory enzymes and pathways. Because rigorous laboratory trials confirmed Trivestin’s proficiency in inhibiting gene expression of compounds that cause inflammation, pain, and joint degradation (including IL-1 Beta, COX-2, and 5-LO), it was predicted that Trivestin would not only reduce pain, but also preserve the integrity of joint tissue. To establish Trivestin’s safety and efficacy (and mitigate the subjective nature of pain relief) a clinical trial was designed to compare Trivestin to both placebo and Celebrex, a recognized standard.

METHODS: 30-day, head-to-head, double-blind clinical data were evaluated to compare safety and efficacy of Trivestin to Celebrex. Sixty (60) subjects with confirmed osteoarthritic joint pain were divided equally into four (4) groups: Group 1 – Placebo (sugar pill); Group 2 – Celebrex (200 mg per day); Group 3 – Trivestin (250 mg per day); and Group 4 – Trivestin (500 mg per day). Subjects were instructed to take the prescribed capsules in divided doses twice per day. Improvements in joint pain, mobility, flexibility, stiffness, and ease of motion (“Quality Of Life” parameters) were assessed at 30 days using the standard WOMAC** and SF-36 (Short-Form) evaluations.

“I am a Clinical Nurse… I had severe pain in both knees, had difficulty walking for any long distance, and qualified for handicapped parking… I have never been a fan of dietary supplements, alternative options, etc. I'm a fairly mainstream health care professional, so I went into this with a little bit of skepticism… After 10 days of taking [Trivestin], I started to notice that I felt stronger in the morning… My legs feel much stronger, I’m walking strong, and although I still feel pressure in my knees, the severe pain is actually gone. I am absolutely amazed that [Trivestin] works so well.”
LaDonna Rosenthal, RN, CNS, MS, NHA

RESULTS: Trivestin was shown to be twice as effective as Celebrex (Group 3: p<0.06; Group 4: p<0.05) [over and above placebo, of course] in reducing pain and stiffness, increasing mobility and flexibility, and improving overall quality of life.

CONCLUSIONS: The ability of Trivestin to block multiple inflammatory enzymes and pathways (COX-2, IL-1 Beta, and 5-LO) seems to account for Trivestin’s superiority over Celebrex under the conditions of this double-blind, clinical comparative trial.

Scutellaria baicalensis (root) SE Skullcap -- Toxic

A closely related herb, Chinese skullcap (Scuterllaria baicalensis) has actually been the subject of a number of studies, including those on animals and people. It has anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antihistamine properties, which can help treat allergies such as hay fever (called allergic rhinitis), particularly when used with other herbs, including stinging nettle.

Overdose of skullcap tincture produces giddiness, stupor, mental confusion, twitching, irregular heartbeat, and epileptic-like symptoms. Skullcap should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Acacia catechu (wood) SE Betel Nut (for chewing)

This species is cultivated in tropical Asia for its seeds, areca or betel nuts. The seed is cut into slices and rolled up in a leaf of betel pepper (Piper betle) with a little lime; when chewed it turns the saliva bright red. The habit is an ancient one and the variations complex (Burkill 1935, Muir and Kirk 1960). Acacia catechu may be added to the quid as well as various spices.

Betel-chewers maintain that the chewing keeps the gums healthy but continual betel-chewing ultimately destroys the teeth (Burkill 1935). Muir and Kirk (1960) concluded from their observations that cancer of the mouth occurring in habitual chewers is due to tobacco (Nicotiana) added to the chew. Cheilitis can occur in chewers (Mendelson 1924). There are many ill-defined races of the palm which are cross-pollinated by insects. Some of the races of palm are unsuitable for the betel nut chewer producing an unpleasant sensation of tightness in the throat with profuse secretion of mucus. The nuts of such races are called by the Malays "pinang mengkelan" (the pinang which chokes). Therefore when a good tree is recognized it is well cared for (Burkill 1935).

Apium graveolens grown in Iraq was assessed for anti-inflammatory activity on intact rats by measuring the suppression of carrageenan-induced paw edema. Capsicum annuum (fruit Jalapeno

Name results from northern latitude growers treating this species as an "annual" growing plant, (even thought the plant is a perennial). It has two non-pungent (non-hot) forms; the Bell, and the Wax and the Pimento peppers, as well as the hot form; the Jalapeno and the NuMex, that are present throughout much of the world. Evidence suggests that Capsicum annuum originally appeared in northern Latin America. They are believed to have been grown domestically in the Mexico area from around 2,500 B.C. As a result of the travels of Christopher Columbus, Capsicum annuum seeds were taken from the area and planted back in the then colonies of Spain and Portugal. Pronounced 'ANN-you-um'.

Eupatorium purpureum (root) Joe Pye Weed

Many people perceive Joe Pye weed to be nothing more than a roadside weed and have never seriously considered its outstanding ornamental attributes. It is a substantial plant which needs space, but when planted in groups or massed can provide spectacular flowering and architectural height. Border rears, cottage gardens, meadows, native plant gardens, wild/naturalized areas or water margins.
